OSA and the Transportation Industry

We’ve all heard this – sleepy driving is worse than drunk driving. Unfortunately, many drivers in the transportation industry still continue to drive without a good night’s sleep. Awareness on this subject has been on the rise.

The major cause of drowsiness is sleep apnea which is most common among overweight men affecting 28 percent of commercial truck drivers. A significant number of accidents and deaths caused by sleepy driving has been recognized and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is collecting public comments as preliminary steps to the requirement of testing for sleep apnea among drivers and rail operators because of the endangerment to the public.

Many drivers are reluctant for testing and treatment because of the out of pocket expenses and the side effects of the CPAP machine. Because of this, it is important to spread awareness on oral sleep appliances as an easier alternative and keep our roads safe!
